Soprano Elin Manahan Thomas presents an exclusive documentary for S4C exploring the background to one of sacred music’s most notable masterpieces – the St John Passion by JS Bach. It offers also a glimpse into the preparations for a televised recording of a brand new Welsh language edition of the piece which can be seen on S4C tomorrow night.

The first ever full Welsh-language performance of Bach’s St John Passion, adapted by Elin Manahan Thomas and Heini Gruffudd. A sacred musical masterpiece for the Easter season on S4C. The performance was recorded at Llandaff Cathedral and conducted by Huw Williams Director of Music at Bath Abbey and an expert in conducting Baroque performances. Among the singers are Elin Manahan Thomas herself; mezzo-soprano Eirlys Myfanwy Davies; baritone Jeremy Huw Williams and tenor Gwilym Bowen. Tenor Rhodri Prys Jones plays the main role – The Evangelist.
